The Story---

Mom called out, "Would you guys like to come in or wait outside?" as she propped the door open.

Java Flow Cafe had a great patio with small trees to climb. "We wanna stay outside, it's nice out." I responded back.

Illustrate this.

---

"What would you like from the cafe?"

"I would like a strawberry banana smoothie please mommy." I told her.

"and you Jude?"

"I do!" he said."

That means me too. He always wanted what I had.

"I'll be right back Grayson, please keep Jude safe."

"Okay mom."

Boys sitting at a patio table.

---

Just as she went inside a man walked up to the cafe with a big golden dog and fluffy white and tan dog with a mushy face. We love dogs, Jude especially, so we ran up to the man.

"What's your name? I'm four and half," I proclaimed.

"Daniel," said the man with a calm, kind voice and a big gentle smile. "And what should I call you?"

"I'm Grayson and this is my baby brother Jude."

"Nice to meet you boys." said Daniel.

Illustrate interaction.

"Can we meet your dogs Mr. Daniel?" I asked

"I don't see why not, why don't you just ask them first to make sure it's okay with them too." he said in a matter of fact tone.

I laughed, then exclaimed, "Dogs don't talk!"

"What a silly thing for a grown up to say." I thought to myself.

Grayson laughing.

---

"Sure they do!" said Daniel as he cracked a kind smile. "They speak more clearly than people do but they talk with their heart and spirit. You can hear them just by looking at them quietly and calmly."

Daniel explaining to the boys while down on one knee.

I spent a few moments in an uncomfortable silence as I tried to figure out if the man was joking or not. Just then Jude looked at the big golden and broke the silence with a joyful yell,  "Happy dog."

"Yes," said Daniel, "he says he is happy to see you."

His ears were gently down, his eyes soft and smiley and his soft jaw was released forming a big golden smile. “He certainly does look happy to see us,” I said to myself.

Illustrate this.

I approached and the dog leaned in gently, "he wants me to pet him" I said.  So I pet him and hugged him and got a big lick. "That's a kiss," I said as I wiped the slobber away.  "He is so nice, what's his name?" I asked.

Illustrate this.

"Cajun and this is his foster brother Elway." responded Daniel

We turned to the little fluffy guy. "I sure would like to scoop him up and hug him," I thought.

Elway sitting and smiling.

Jude had already started walking over in his dad boots and began reaching down towards Elway, his back arched and his tail went between his legs as Jude closed in on him. Jude stopped, backed up a bit, put his hands to his mouth and made a cooing sound.

Illustrate Elway like this.

"Jude does that when someone is nervous," I explained to Daniel.

Jude standing back with his hands together in front of his chest, lips puckered. Grayson explaining to Daniel who is holding Cajun’s leash as he sits there smiling.

I decided to get lower and move slowly towards him so I could be extra gentle. Elway seemed happy but just as I got close he turned away and froze, staring away with bugged out eyes.

Elway in this posture.

"What is he saying," Mr. Daniel asked me.

"I don't know but he looks like a bee just landed on him." I answered.

"What does that feel like to you when a bee lands on you?"

"I feel frozen and scared and wish it would go away." and just as I said that I thought to myself, “then I should just back away because I’m making him feel like a bee just landed on him.”

Just as I did that Elway looked into my eyes, they switched from bugged out to curious and kind. His face relaxed and then he proceeded to crawl under me and slowly rolled over.

Elway gently rolling over.

"I never saw him do that with a stranger before!" Daniel said in amazement.

"I think I get it now!" I said with excitement. "What they feel is what they say and if I listen to what they say they feel good just like I do when others listen to me!"

Grayson excited with Elway on hind legs smiling at Gray.

"Boys we are gonna be late for practice, let's get in the car!" Mom called out with a set of keys, two smoothies, a handbag and a coffee in her arms as she slid the car door open with her foot.

"Take care boys."

"Thank you sir. "

The boys and dogs smiling with mom in the background at the car.

Back in the car Jude and I told mom all about our new friends.

"Wonderful." she said, "did you remember to ask before petting?" "Yes, we asked Daniel and most importantly we asked Cajun and Elway."

Mom laughed, "did you get answers from the dogs?"

Mom turned around in the car facing the two boys in their car seats.

"Yes Mom, we did. It was amazing."

Daniel and the dogs waving as the boys wave from the car.
